Andy Carl is a Senior Advisor to IPTI and a member of IPTI's Advisory Board. He is an independent expert on conflict resolution and public participation in peace processes. Andy Carl co-founded and led Conciliation Resources in the UK (1994-2016) to become one of the world’s leading non-profit organizations in the field of peacebuilding. There he oversaw the organization’s program work and established the Accord publication series promoting international comparative learning from peace processes. Previously, he helped found International Alert, working with its Secretary General, Martin Ennals as the first member of staff and Program Director. He is currently an Honorary Fellow of Practice at the School of Law, University of Edinburgh and an Associate Fellow at the Overseas Development Institute, London. He also serves as an advisor to a number of groups and peacebuilding initiatives including the Democratic Progress Institute in London, the Legal Tools for Peace-Making Project in Cambridge, and the Oxford Research Group, London. He holds a master’s degree from Trinity College, University of Dublin and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley (both in Literature). He continues to have a particular interest in how proscribed armed groups can engage in dialogue and negotiations to end their wars, and how local and global civil society organizations can more effectively find ways to prevent violence.
